"The Forgotten Heroes"

By Jose Reyes 5/28/2007

As everyone here in the United States relax their aching muscles and reflects back on the history of this precious country, we honor the reason why we are "Free" here in America, we pay our respects to all the fallen heroes who have fought for this country. Most people go away on weekend trips and some stay home and cook up a storm on their grill. We have parades and honor our heroes and for those who lost love ones, the feeling is not so joyous, but because the whole country mourns together on this day, the sadness is formidably decreased and patriotism takes its place to comfort our minds. When I look around on Internet and check the TV program guide, I see many special events going on, but I also see an absence of a particular group of soldiers who proudly fought for our country and have been bitterly forgotten, these are the Men and Women who fought in Vietnam. These were the Men and Women who were placed involuntarily in a draft with no reason at all. They were sent to the jungles in Vietnam to fight a very organized and very determined Viet Cong who were fighting for their freedom decades before from French colonization. The Viet Cong had just kicked the French in the butt after a brutal 10 years of battle and were determined. The Viet Cong, had a complicated tunnel complex Read More that supported large troops and well supplied hospitals. President Johnson (Democrat), decided that we would travel around the world to fight a useless war, where the average age of the untrained American soldiers was 19 and for what reason? I still don't know. I also really can't understand why they keep showing movies, year after year on the History Channel and on AMC (American Movie Channel) that only deal with WW II and some of the Korean war. What happened to all the Vietnam movies, what's wrong with them. These were soldiers who fought for this country, they represented this country. Why wasn't there any kind of hero's welcome at all, this is totally disgraceful and must be changed immediately. No matter how much time passes, there is no way this beloved country of ours can and will ever shake off what occurred in Vietnam and why we were really there. There is not enough emphasis put on the "Gulf of Tonkin", Read More where America officially entered into the war. There's not enough emphasis placed on the Kennedy assassination and the involvement of Vietnam. There is not enough emphasis placed on the bombings of "The Rolling Thunder" campaign and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. During Vietnam there were so many historical events happening U.S. at once that this "conflict" was a secondary thought. It was in the very late eighties when the American public became concerned and the swift increasing numbers of casualties was the reason why. These song helps you understand the times and the mood "I'd like to change the world"  by "Ten Years After", "Almost Cut my Hair"  by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, "Ball of Confusion"  by The Temptations and "War Pigs"  by Black Sabbath. The music at that time was very interesting and very educational, although while this musical revolution was occurring it was viewed negative to society. On the contrary, it was freedom of speech at its finest hour.  There was no reason for America to be involved in a war where there was nothing to defend, it was a pure example of abuse of authority by a government with tyrannical ideas. So please tell me someone, why can't they show any movies concerning Vietnam on Memorial day? This page will remain opened until TV programming changes and until the attitude towards these Men and Women change and everyone realizes they were just victims of the system in place during the Sixties and the early Seventies, God bless them all, they are my Heroes, FOREVER!!!
